Why do you love Romania? / 2014
The work debates Romania’s position within the EU and people’s perception of the waves of mass migration of recent years. The Netherlands refused most radically (and continuously) Romania's and Bulgaria's entry within the Schengen area. After the integration within the European Union, huge numbers of Romanian immigrants took over the Western countries and managed to give birth to a silent animosity.
The way Romania is perceived is quite different than how it used to be 8 years ago (unfortunately). Many Europeans didn’t know where to place Romania on the map before. Now they can. But they know little about the country and pretty much nothing about the reasons why Romania arrived to this situation.
Considering that the EU is a place of harmony, peace and understanding, we are all supposed to be equal within this union.
In February 2014, during Rotterdam Art Week, I asked the people of the Netherlands, my brothers: “Why do you love Romania?”
The work was made out of a table, a chair, some pencils, some pieces of paper with that question and a mailbox with my name written on it.
