RULAND \ 2012
"RULAND" is an utopia (derived from Rumänien and from "ruhe", which in German means peace, tranquility, rest, calm). Dacian Sârbu, the President of the ONGSR (Organization of Non-German speaking Romanians that live in Germany) asked for a radical change when he felt it was needed.
After the metro attacks on the Turkish minority from Berlin and the far right acts from Hamburg, Mr. Sârbu was shocked. He could not believe that that had actually happened. Thus, he went on May 1st 2012 to the neo-nazi march from Neumunster, as an observer, trying to understand why this has to pass as a legal act, even if it is free spoken, in a country with such a troubled history as Germany. He rested silent for a week after the protest, closed in his office.
At the end of the week he stated his wish of writing the following letter to Ms. Angela Merkel, the Chancellor of his adoptive country. You can read his demands to the German Government here. He sent 4 letters by the classical post and by e-mail - one to the Chancellor's Office, one to the Parliament of the Federal Republic of Germany, one to the Migration Federal Office of Germany, and one to the Schleswig-Holstein Government.
When Ms. Merkel read his letter, she broke into tears and saw the truth that could be found in the words of this man, a visionary. 3 days later she asked the Parliament to comply to the wishes of the Romanian minority and try to redefine the last chapter of her land.
While carefully documenting herself, in preparation for the new aspect of her beloved Germany, Ms. Merkel came across the great work of the Romanian politician Gheorghe Funar. In the '90s, in the time that he served as Mayor of Cluj, one of the greatest cities of the Carpathian garden, Mr. Funar painted all the benches of all the parks of the town in the colors of the Romanian flag (blue, yellow and red), in order to make everyone aware of the fact that they are living in Romania, and make sure that even the older people, who have problems with their memory from time to time, do not forget which is the country that is offering them their bread. Also, he wanted to introduce the Romanian flag to the younger generations, teaching them the colors from the time that they made sandcastles in the parks of his unique city.
Ms. Merkel decided that she would do the same with the parks of her country, using the primary colors and also the Bauhaus pigments as educators of the small ones. Although she was criticized for the similarity between her method and the Hitlerjugend indoctrination of the kids, she pursued her dream without thinking about losing popular vote. I was asked to document some of the playgrounds, as a mere photographer, in order to serve as example to the minority-oriented politics that could do well in other countries.

Sehr geehrte Frau Bundeskanzlerin, Dr. Angela Merkel,

Kiel, May 21st, 2012
Open letter to the German government
My name is Dacian Sârbu. I am the President of the Organization of Non-German speaking Romanians that live in Germany. The organization is set in the city of Kiel, in Northern Germany, on Steenbeker Weg. ONGSR has almost 2000 members (1860 members to be exact), but it represents the interest of all the 200.000 Romanians that live in Germany (maybe 250.000 counting all Romanians – the ones that work on the black market, the ones that are unemployed and the ones that stay illegally).
Through this open letter we want to express our need for a change. We support a program through which immigrants should stop feeling like immigrants. When we chose the German lifestyle, we took a German job in a German company, we become Germans. But we do not feel that. We are seen as Germans only formally.
We helped to rebuild Germany just like any other German and we remained here through the hard times and the good. We were always reliable. Germany could have always put its trust in us. All that we ever asked in return was not to be seen as outsiders, as people who only want to profit (benefit) out of this great country.
I ask the German government to please change the name of Deutschland to RULAND (Ruland – Rumänien land) in order to fix this problem. This will make Romanians and other immigrants alike to feel that they are in a country that respects their identity, integrity and evolution. This is a sign of flexibility and openness to change.
We ask that our efforts find the deserved gratitude from the German Government and from this great country.
RULAND (Rumänien land) is a place of opened dialogue, multiculturalism and flexibility. It is an answer to the far-right nationalist movements that destroy numerous immigrant lives.
We ask that Deutschland change its name into RULAND in the name of the whole 200.000 Romanians that live and work in it, and lived and worked in it for a long time now, in the name of all the great Romanian football players that played in Germany – such as Dorinel Munteanu, who played 4 years for 1. FC Koln and 5 years for VfL Wolfsburg or Ciprian Marica, who played 4 years for VfB Stuttgart and now plays for Schalke 04. Everyone deserves this.
We adopted German beer in our land, when Germans opened up the breweries in Transylvania and Banat. We adopted German sausages when the Germans who moved to Transylvania brought their recipes about 700 years ago.
Is there a reason why Germany would not adopt us and our name, our way of life and our flag?
The German flag has similar colors to the Romanian flag, the only difference is that they are horizontal, while on the Romanian flag they are vertical.
The only color that is different is black. Is black so important? Why shouldn’t you change the black into blue? The black is sad, too serious and a dead color. Blue means possibility, calm, change, the opened sea and the beautiful sky that is purest over RULAND. Blue is much better than black.
We only ask this in the name of multiculturalism, political openness and in the name of ending forever the immigrant feeling.
Please, take this letter in consideration with maximum seriousity. The 200.000 Romanians that live in Germany deserve this change.
RULAND should exist in the name of all immigrants, of all nationalities, of all sexes, of all the skin colors, of all religions and of all sexual orientations.
It is a statement of freedom, democracy and equality.
Thank you
Respectfully yours,
Dacian Sârbu
I will await your answer in the name of our Organization’s request.
